Finishing
Finish
Applies to
Foil, embossing and UV spot. Shrink wrap always wraps the whole product.
Downloads a ZIP containing a standalone HTML version of your current setup — all settings
and textures are embedded. Open it directly or embed it on your website. Nothing is uploaded
to a server.
On: three.js travels inside the file — it opens by double-click, forever, with no connection.
Adds about 0.9 MB (roughly 0.3 MB in the ZIP).
Off: the library is fetched from unpkg.com when the file is opened. Smaller file, needs
internet.
On: exactly one full turn, so the video loops seamlessly — the speed setting has no effect.
Off: records your own animation (your axes and speed). No guaranteed loop.
5.0s
Fast movement smears like on camera. Exporting takes a good deal longer.
⚠ There is no rotation to show right now (no axis active, or the Scanner look is on) — this exports a still video.

Printed Matter Animator is free to use. Here is exactly what you may do with
what comes out of it.
Images and videos (PNG, MP4, GIF)
Yours, without conditions. Use them commercially, in client work, in shops, in print — no
credit required, nothing to ask for. They are renderings of your own artwork.
Exports carry a small “Made with Printed Matter Animator” watermark by default. You can switch
it off in the export dialog, free and with no strings attached — a mention or a pretzel is
welcome, never required.
Web export (the standalone HTML)
You may host it, embed it on any number of websites and use it commercially, free of charge —
as long as the small “Made with Printed Matter Animator” credit in the corner stays
visible. That credit is the only thing this free tool asks for, and it is a condition
of this licence, not a favour. If it is removed, the permission to use the exported file ends.
The exported file is a copy of this application. Permission to publish that file does
not license the application itself: you may not reuse, rebuild or operate its source
code as your own tool or service.
Your images
You are responsible for holding the rights to any image you upload. Nothing is uploaded to a
server — everything stays in your browser — so I never see your files and cannot check them.
No warranty
This tool is provided “as is”, without any warranty. It may render inaccurately, and to the
extent permitted by law I accept no liability for damage or lost work arising from its use.
Note in particular that nothing is saved: reloading the page discards your
whole session. Export early.
Paper and material names
Names of papers, boards and cover materials are trademarks or product names of their respective
manufacturers and owners, who hold all rights to them. They are used only to describe the material.
No affiliation or endorsement. Thickness, tone, colour and finish are approximations from manufacturer
data and may differ from the material you receive. Always confirm spine width with your printer.
No guarantee of continuity
This is a free side project. It may change, break or disappear, and there is no support or
uptime commitment. Files you have already exported keep working regardless — they are
self-contained.

Switch off the watermark?
Totally fine — your exports are yours either way.
If it doesn’t get in the way, leaving it on helps a lot: it’s how other people find
this free tool. If you’d rather go without, a mention (bookanimator.de) or a
pretzel keeps it going.
No code was taken from either; Printed Matter Animator was written from
scratch.

What’s new
Everything that changed since the first version, newest first. Small fixes are
folded into the entry they belong to; a few early steps were released together and are listed
as a range.
v1.78.024 Oct 2026
Flyers and loose posters can now bend in more ways: a gentle S-shaped wave, a corner that lifts off, or the familiar curve running diagonally.
v1.77.124 Oct 2026
The book showreel moves more smoothly, with gentler opening, closing and turning, and pages that flip in a more natural rhythm.
v1.77.023 Oct 2026
Uncoated papers can show their surface on request, from a fine, chalky grain to a softer tooth and rough grain, with print taking on the texture, and images are now grouped by where they sit. New animations turn copies into a spinning sculpture, a burst, a tidy stack that flies apart or a rain of books and flyers, let books drop onto the table and open or pile up into a tower, and let a flyer float down in a gust of wind or fan out.
v1.75.021 Oct 2026
PDFs set up in CMYK for print now come in with colours much closer to how they look in professional print software, instead of brighter and more saturated. Flyers, posters, folded leaflets and cards are printed on a paper of your choice, from basic types to the manufacturer catalogue and cover boards, which sets their thickness, surface and paper tone. A new printed bookcloth shows its weave through the print, and fine linen covers keep their texture from further away.
v1.74.020 Oct 2026
Flyers, posters, folded leaflets and cards can take their artwork and size straight from a PDF, with the first page on the front or outside and a second page on the back or inside; leaflets and cards are laid out as the unfolded sheet.
v1.73.020 Oct 2026
Hardcover board edges take the colour found at the edge of the cover artwork, as a wrapped cover would, or a colour of your own for painted edges. The artwork for the inside of a softcover now sits with the rest of the cover artwork, and searching for a setting that only appears with another binding or template tells you when it does.
v1.72.016 Oct 2026
Two more views show the fore edge straight from the side and a classic product shot from the front and above, and animations always start facing straight ahead and keep a chosen view in place.
v1.71.015 Oct 2026
Setups saved before softcovers printed on their inside covers now carry their endpaper images and colours onto the inside covers, the paper catalogue gains further book papers from Nippon Paper, Domtar, Sylvamo and Mondi, signs of use differ between the two pages of a spread and between front and back cover, mirrored at the spine, flexcovers can let their thin boards bend when lying open, and a new showreel animation swings a book open into a fan of pages, holds on chosen spreads, riffles through and turns to the back, with optional motion blur in video exports. Animations now look at the product at eye level, or from slightly above if preferred.
v1.70.214 Oct 2026
A book can be opened straight away while an animation is still set, the head and foot of an open cover close cleanly at the joint, and prism stickers have finer facets.
v1.70.113 Oct 2026
Flipping through a PDF now turns its pages visibly in every loop of the animation.
v1.70.013 Oct 2026
Softcovers now print on the inside of their covers instead of carrying endpapers, filled from your own images, from the second page of a cover PDF or from the content PDF, and a cover PDF with flaps fills the flaps too. Stickers can be holographic, with rainbow, glitter, prism, star or mirror-like disc effects on the whole label, the artwork or the background, and new animations sway, stop at front, spine and back, lie down to show an open spread, stand up and turn, or take a full tour from cover through every page and back, with page flips running forward or backward.
v1.69.013 Oct 2026
Books can be bound as flexcovers with thin, bendable boards that lie open more easily, and hardcovers can show raw greyboard at their edges with the printed cover laminated flush, or be covered in plain greyboard altogether. Booklets take their own cover paper at its real thickness, cover boards join the paper catalogue, and magazines can be packed in a mailing bag with a sealed adhesive flap. Stickers can keep a safe zone around their artwork, and the folded edge of a booklet shows its nested sheets.
v1.68.012 Oct 2026
Front and back endpapers can come from a PDF, as single pages or as spreads, with both filled from one file. A PDF flip-through keeps its place in the book while its length is changed, and several pages turning at once land cleanly.
v1.67.012 Oct 2026
Books can wear a dust jacket with flaps tucked inside the boards, a belly band, up to three ribbon markers, a notebook elastic and a slipcase they slide out of, each with its own colour or a printed wrap-around image, and jacket and band slide off in their own animation. Booklets and magazines take belly bands and slipcases too, and any cover can carry a sticker, round, square or die-cut to the shape of a PNG, SVG or PDF. Front, spine and back can come from one PDF, as separate pages or as a full cover spread, and the book takes its size and spine width from it. Images can be dragged from one slot to another to swap them, or dropped straight onto a slot from the desktop. Colour bleeding off the PDF pages now runs across all three page edges, closed and open, and the open menu section is marked so you always see where you are. An open book now sits at its real place in the content, thicker on one side than the other, and can jump to any spread with the pages fanning past. The paper catalogue grows to 168 grades, with new book and magazine papers from Europe, North America and Japan, and the cover materials add softcover boards, more textured cover papers and leatherettes, with textures that no longer repeat visibly. A cover can also be any paper from the catalogue at its own weight, which then sets the cover thickness.
v1.66.011 Oct 2026
Books can take covers from the same paper as their pages, print artwork onto the paper tone, open at their endpapers and be leafed through from there to the back endpapers, with the spine turning and the stacked signatures folding like a real sewn or glued binding, follow bookbinders' standard measures for boards, joints, coils, staples and flaps, show those bindings in their edges, and a loaded PDF can be flipped through from cover to back as an animation or video of any length, several pages in the air at once when it is short, with pages bending softly and coloured page margins showing on the fore edge like chapter tabs. Hardcover edges show the covering turned over the boards, screw posts gleam like metal, and animations start from the front. Scenes gain ready-made light setups, a small rotation ball over the product, flat views of spine, cover, foot and all sides, and records spin like on a turntable.
v1.65.08 Oct 2026
Books and booklets can now be printed on real papers from leading mills and merchants, taking thickness, shade and finish from the manufacturers' data, while pages and thickness can still be set by hand. Covers can be made from bookcloths, cover papers and boards with their colour ranges and true surface structure, with artwork printed on top or plain, and endpapers take a preset, a colour or your own image.
v1.64.07 Oct 2026
Scans fade into darkness and blur away from the glass like a real scanner, with books pressed flat, bindings showing in the gutter and page edges varying in tone. Plastic film now hugs books and records thinly with crisp shine and shrink ripples, and posters can look freshly pasted with wet glue.
v1.63.05 Oct 2026
The scanner look can add grain, a touch of softness and light creeping in at the edges, all set with one slider.
v1.62.05 Oct 2026
The scanner look now works for flyers, cards, leaflets and posters too, on a background colour of your choice, and the used look reaches flat print with cracked folds. Covers shade evenly, books with rounded corners open and close smoothly, and web exports only carry the images they need.
v1.61.04 Oct 2026
Spiral and Wire-O bound books and booklets can now turn their pages too, each page swinging around the wire.
v1.60.03 Oct 2026
Books and booklets can load a PDF as their pages and cover, and the menu is more compact, better sorted and can be searched. Saved setups with an open book keep their angle.
v1.59.13 Oct 2026
Typing a size or thickness no longer jumps to the limit while you are still typing.
v1.59.02 Oct 2026
Books and booklets can read right to left and turn their pages one by one, live or as a looping video. Spiral bindings run through punched holes, rounded hardcovers show shoulders, hardcovers can have coloured endpapers, and the scanner look shows real pages too.
v1.58.01 Oct 2026
Open books now show real pages running into the spine, set by page count and paper or by thickness, sewn in sections or glued, with a hollow back on hardcovers. Opening a book now lays it down for a better view, sewn books show their sections, headbands sit on the book block, and spiral bindings, rounded corners and plastic film look cleaner.
v1.57.030 Sep 2026
Front, back and side views now look at the product dead on, and snapping to an axis turns it perfectly straight. Books and booklets now open and close with a smooth motion, also as a looping video, and rounded hardcover spines bulge outward when the book lies open.
v1.56.029 Sep 2026
Video exports keep their proportions, even if the window changes size while they are being made.
v1.55.028 Sep 2026
Copies now settle into a clean, straight view for every arrangement, with the bottom copy of each stack lying square. Fans open out from a straight copy.
v1.54.027 Sep 2026
Scan-style views look more lifelike: a side lamp brings out the gutter, rounded spines and the sections of an open spine, with a soft glint on glossy covers and page edges that show at the sides of a spread. Plastic film now crinkles like the real thing, also in scan-style cover views. Open hardcovers now show their recessed spine and joints. Books and booklets can also look gently read, with rubbed edges, softened corners and light creases. Switching products, copies or poses now glides smoothly into view.
v1.53.025 Sep 2026
A book can now be shown as a single shot: back, spine and front side by side, straight on. Exports carry a small watermark, which you can switch off. Hardcovers and paperbacks look more natural, with finer headbands, softer edges, a visible cover and page edges that read as paper. Books and booklets can now be shown flat and straight on against black, like a scan — as a spread, the cover or the unfolded cover.
v1.52.024 Sep 2026
Copies work for flyers, cards and leaflets too, and can be fanned out, set up as a display or laid out in a grid. Foil reads as gold from the start, and ground shadows can be made softer.
v1.51.021 Sep 2026
Eyelets can run all the way around a flag or banner now, evenly spaced on every edge, and they go right through the fabric.
v1.50.018 Sep 2026
The film around a book sits tighter and reflects across the whole cover. Flags and banners hang from eyelets now, sized to the format, instead of a pole.
v1.49.017 Sep 2026
Sheets and books can curve, colours come through truer, and a gatefold sleeve can be printed on the inside.
v1.48.015 Sep 2026
Products can animate themselves, booklets bind in more ways, and a whole setup saves to a file.
v1.47.014 Sep 2026
Closed books look properly bound, posters go up on walls and billboards, and the controls were sorted by task. A few features are switched off for the time being.
v1.45.0 – v1.46.013 Sep 2026
These release notes arrived.
v1.44.013 Sep 2026
On a phone the controls sit at the bottom, so the product stays in view.
v1.43.012 Sep 2026
The cut edges of a book can carry their own artwork.
v1.42.012 Sep 2026
Groundwork on the export side.
v1.41.010 Sep 2026
Records come in any colour, with splatter and marble patterns and a real centre hole. Sleeve spines can be printed.
v1.40.19 Sep 2026
The support link moved, and it now buys a pretzel.
v1.40.03 Sep 2026
Foil, embossing and spot varnish can be limited to one side of a sheet. Shrink wrap stays around the whole product.
v1.39.03 Sep 2026
Foil reads as foil again on flat products instead of going almost black.
v1.38.0 – v1.38.22 Sep 2026
Dragging turns the product instead of walking the camera around it, so the light stays where it was.
v1.37.0 – v1.37.531 Aug – 2 Sep 2026
A photo can stand behind the product, and it travels into every export.
v1.36.025 Aug 2026
New product: a saddle-stitched booklet.
v1.35.019 Aug 2026
The header went away and its buttons moved within reach; the canvas gained the space.
v1.34.0 – v1.34.118 Aug 2026
The axis widget is clickable and snaps the view straight.
v1.33.017 Aug 2026
The controls became one collapsible list, each row showing what it holds.
v1.32.0 – v1.32.414 – 16 Aug 2026
Every product can cast a shadow on the ground. Folding cards and the phone layout got fixes.
v1.30.0 – v1.31.114 Aug 2026
Phones got a proper menu, and the canvas finally reads its own size.
v1.29.06 Aug 2026
A web export can carry everything it needs inside, so the file opens without a connection.
v1.28.0 – v1.28.24 – 5 Aug 2026
Holographic foil that shifts colour with the viewing angle, on every part of a folded product.
v1.26.0 – v1.27.04 Aug 2026
New product: flag and banner, with wind.
v1.25.03 Aug 2026
Foil can be placed with a mask instead of covering a whole side.
v1.23.0 – v1.24.03 Aug 2026
Poster creases actually show now.
v1.22.01 Aug 2026
Auto-rotation can run the other way.
v1.21.01 Aug 2026
Imprint and licence, and no third-party request left on the page.
v1.20.0 – v1.20.130 Jul – 1 Aug 2026
Fixes to the open book: the pages stay inside the cover, and the corners match.
v1.18.0 – v1.19.129 Jul 2026
Web export as a ZIP with its own viewer. Image and video export show exactly what is on screen.
v1.8.0 – v1.17.022 – 29 Jul 2026
The open book was rebuilt from the ground up.
v1.5.0 – v1.7.020 – 22 Jul 2026

v1.3.0 – v1.4.115 Jul 2026
The book can be shown open.
v1.0.0 – v1.2.0Jul 2026
